Beaumont is a fairly large city located on the coastal plains of Texas, less than fifty miles away from the Gulf of Mexico. In circa 1880s, Henry Millard purchased acres of land in this particular area in Texas, built businesses, and later found the city. From a community engaged in agriculture and cattle raising, Beaumont residents later evolved into lumber and rice-mill businessmen, and eventually into oil exporters. Oil fields were discovered in the first year of 1900 by Spindletop, an event that paved the way to population boom, modernization, and area expansion.
