Athens
If Athens in Greece is considered to be the seat of the Greek gods, it can be likened to Athens in Texas. However, it is not because they have their own mythologies but because the city is blessed with a very diverse population. Athens, Texas can easily be considered as a melting pot of cultures and beliefs, considering its rich population composed of Whites, African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, among many others.

Located 35 miles West of Tyler in Henderson County, Athens Texas is considered to be the birthplace of the hamburger. While that may be largely contested, what remains the same is that Athens is considered to be the Black Eyed Pea capital of the world because of its annual Black Eyed Pea festival.

Named after the capital city of Greece, Athens was named because the first town council had assumed and hoped that the city will be a cultural seat considering its very rich mix of people and race. While it did not turn out to be such a cultural center as assumed, what remains true is that the town highlights several cultures because of the diverse mix the city is faced with.

The town offers parks, theaters, and Lake Athens as places for recreation.
