Alvin
It has once been said that Alvin is so small it does not even have a last name. However, in fact Alvin Texas was named after an Alvin Morgan who was commissioned to supervise the loading and shipping of cattle to the area back in the 1870s. It was his moves to settle in the area and encouraged more people to finally take up residence in that small town. The original plan was to name the town Morgan city after Alvin Morgan. However, the town had learned of a similarly named town in Texas which was why Alvin was adopted in its place.
Located twelve miles southeast of Houston, Alvin is a small community which experienced many several hurricanes which make for very interesting developments of the town as well as the people.
While it may not be as popular as other Texan towns, its claim to fame are but some of the famous Alvin residents such as Nolan Ryan, a baseball superstar, and Dr. FR Win, a medical corpsman in the World War I.
Dr. Win was praised nationally for his newspaper report of the battle of Santiago, he was well recognized by Theodore Roosevelt. Nolan Ryan, on the other hand, is a baseball superstar well known for his pitching for the New York Mets and the California Angels. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.
